Do's and Don'ts

Ø Don’t sneak out when your child isn’t looking. Your child will never trust you and will be afraid to leave your side or turn his back for even a moment.

Ø Do tell your child when you are going to leave. “I am going to leave in five minutes. Five minutes is up now. It’s time for me to go.”

Ø Don’t leave without telling the teacher. Do let the teacher know a little ahead of time so she can comfort your child as you leave.

Ø Do make simple statements, “I’m going to work now,” or “It’s time for you to go back to your class room now.” Offer realistic choices that give your child some sense of control. “Do you want to say good-bye to me here or at the door?”

Don’t hesitate, vacillate or keep changing your mind about leaving
